If your dog loves picking up pinecones on walks, you may have wondered whether it's actually safe to let them chew on one. After all, pinecones are natural, readily available, and irresistible to plenty of dogs. But natural doesn't always mean safe to chew.
Can Dogs Chew on Pinecones?
Generally, it's best not to let your dog chew on or eat real pinecones. Pinecones can have sharp, hard edges that may injure your dog's mouth or gums, and pieces can break off as they chew. If swallowed, larger pieces can also pose a choking or gastrointestinal obstruction risk. Pinecones may also carry dirt, mold, sap, or other substances from the environment.
That doesn't mean your dog's fascination with pinecones is something you need to discourage altogether. In fact, their interest makes perfect sense. Dogs explore the world with their mouths, and a pinecone offers an interesting combination of texture, scent, shape, and movement. The behavior is natural; the pinecone itself just isn't the safest way to satisfy it.
A Safer Way to Enjoy the Pinecone
If your dog loves carrying, chewing, chasing, or investigating pinecones, consider giving them a purpose-built toy that captures some of the same sensory appeal without asking your dog to chew on an actual piece of forest debris.
