Five Ways to Care for Nature with Your Dog
Spending time outdoors with your dog is one of life's greatest joys. It's also a chance to give back to the natural world we love to explore. From trails to beaches, there are simple, meaningful ways to care for nature while bonding with your pup.
1. Go for a Cleanup Hike
You're already carrying poop bags, so what's one more? Throw a trash bag in your pack (and some hand sanitizer) and head to your favorite local trail or beachhead.
2. Plant Bug-Friendly Flowers
Dig in the dirt with your dog and plant flowers that'll attract some good bugs (win-win if your dog likes to watch butterflies). Good options include zinnias, marigolds, sunflowers, petunias, and bee balm.
3. Read Up
The more information we have on climate change and action, the better we can do. Curl up on the couch with your dog, rest, and learn more. A great place to start is 'Not the End of the World' by Hannah Ritchie.
4. Make Your Voice Heard
Call your political representatives and talk to them about the importance of protecting our National Parks and Bureau of Land Management land, as well as local green spaces you enjoy with your dog. You can also join local environmental groups and protests where you and your dog can get into some "good trouble" together.
5. Reconsider Buying Habits
Between free two-day shipping and our credit card numbers being pre-loaded on our phones, it's become all too easy to overspend with less intention. Focus on buying higher-quality products from companies that align with your values and the things you and your dog care about.
BONUS: Simply Spend Time Outside
Studies have shown that the more time you spend in nature, the more you cultivate a connection with and care for the environment. That leads to stronger pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors.
Caring for nature doesn't have to mean big lifestyle changes. It can start with small, intentional choices made in the quiet moments. With your dog by your side, every step can be a step towards a greener, kinder planet.
